Terms of Use
The short version
Decoder Ring is a toy cipher app for iPhone. It's free to download, with optional paid upgrades. By using it, you agree to the terms below. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
1. Apple Standard EULA
Your use of Decoder Ring is also governed by Apple's standard End User License Agreement, available at apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/. Where the Apple EULA and these terms conflict, the Apple EULA controls.
2. License grant
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Decoder Ring on Apple devices you own or control. You may not reverse engineer the app, redistribute it, sell access to it, or use it to build a competing product.
3. Subscriptions and renewals
Some features are unlocked via auto-renewing subscriptions sold through the App Store:
- Auto-Shift — $9.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial
- Polyglot — $14.99 per year, with a 7-day free trial (when launched)
Subscriptions auto-renew at the end of each term unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when you upgrade to a paid plan.
4. One-time purchases
Plus and Contacts are non-consumable, one-time purchases tied to your Apple ID. They do not auto-renew. If you reinstall on a new device, use the Restore Purchases button inside the app to bring them back.
5. This is not real encryption
Decoder Ring is a toy cipher, not a security product. It applies a public, reversible word-shift transformation. Anyone who knows your cipher number and dictionary can decode your messages. Anyone with cryptanalysis skills can probably decode them without that knowledge. Don't use Decoder Ring for anything you actually need to keep private — passwords, financial information, regulated communications, evidence, etc.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to use Decoder Ring to:
- Send or solicit content that is illegal where you or the recipient lives
- Harass, threaten, or impersonate anyone
- Bypass legal obligations to disclose communications (for example, employer record-keeping rules)
7. No warranty
Decoder Ring is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind. We don't promise it will work perfectly, work on every device, or work forever. We don't guarantee that the cipher is uncrackable — see section 5.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer of Decoder Ring is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of Decoder Ring. Our total liability for any claim arising out of these terms is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the 12 months before the claim arose.
9. Changes
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced in the next app release notes. Your continued use of Decoder Ring after a change means you accept the updated terms.
10. Termination
You can stop using Decoder Ring at any time by deleting it from your device. We may discontinue the app, change features, or stop offering specific tiers. If we discontinue a paid tier you've subscribed to, we'll refund any unused portion or migrate you to an equivalent tier.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes must be brought in the courts of that jurisdiction.
